Die Nation, nationale Geschichtsschreibung und nationale öffentliche Erinnerungskulturen stellen nach wie vor machtvolle Faktoren der Generierung von Narrativen und Deutungen der Vergangenheit dar. Zugleich zeichnet sich jedoch seit geraumer Zeit ab, dass supra-nationale Geschichtsschreibungen und universalistische Geschichtsdeutungen im europäischen Raum an Bedeutung gewinnen. So lässt sich im Rahmen der europäischen Einigung eine Suche nach „europäischen“ Traditionsbeständen und gemeinsamer Identitätsstiftung beobachten. Wissenschaftlich haben postkoloniale Ansätze oder auch Ansätze der World- und Global History in gewissem Maße zu einer Überwindung eurozentrischer Perspektiven beigetragen. Zuweilen ist gar von einer Globalisierung der Erinnerung – als einer der kulturellen Begleiterscheinungen der ökonomischen Globalisierung – die Rede. Angesichts dieser Entwicklungen kommt der Erforschung von Migrationserinnerungen besondere Bedeutung zu. Die Untersuchung der Hervorbringung und Bewahrung solcher transnationaler (oder translokaler) Erinnerungen schließt insbesondere auch die Frage ein, in welcher Weise MigrantInnen ihre Zugehörigkeitsgefühle und Teilhabechancen in Erzählungen, d.h. in den Deutungen der Vergangenheit zu verankern suchen. Die mit dieser Thematik verbundenen methodischen Probleme sollen Gegenstand eines Kolloquiums sein, das im Juni 2008 an der Universität Luxemburg veranstaltet wird.
Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes zum Thema „Kollektive Erfahrung, intergenerationale Erinnerung und Identitätskonstruktion in Luxemburg“ werden zur Zeit vier für die luxemburgische Gesellschaft bedeutungsvolle Erinnerungskomplexe untersucht. Neben den Erinnerungen an Krieg und Besatzung, deren Analyse Teil eines europäisch-vergleichenden Projektes ist (siehe Centre for Interdisciplinary Memory Research, KWI Essen), werden die Erinnerungen bestimmter Bevölkerungsgruppen, die bisher von der (historischen) Forschung eher vernachlässigt wurden, betrachtet, nämlich von Bauern, Industriearbeitern und Immigranten. Das letzgenannte Teilprojekt (italienische und portugiesische Arbeitsmigranten) untersucht, in welcher Weise der Prozess der Einwanderung nach Luxemburg in der Erinnerung der Angehörigen unterschiedlicher Generationen in Migrantenfamilien präsent ist. Gefragt wird nach den Einflüssen der Erinnerungskulturen des Herkunfts- und des Ankunftslandes und danach, wie diese die Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit und sozialer Teilhabe prägen.
Die Erforschung der Erinnerung im Hinblick auf die unterschiedlichen Migrationsprozesse, die verschiedenen Erinnerungskulturen sowie das Verhältnis zwischen gemeinsam geteiltem kollektivem Gedächtnis einerseits und familiären und individuellen Partikularerinnerungen andererseits steht erst am Anfang. Der Methodenproblematik, die in in diesem Feld möglicherweise neue Aspekte offenbart, möchten wir uns daher im Rahmen eines Kolloquiums widmen. Es stellen sich unter anderem die folgenden Fragen:
- Welche Erhebungs- und Auswertungsformen sind geeignet, die spezifische, durch Migration begründete Komplexität individueller, familiärer und öffentlicher Erinnerungen zu untersuchen?
- Wie untersuchen wir die Bedeutung, die die Geschichte des Herkunfts- und Ankunftslandes in verschiedenen Stadien des Migrationsprozesses und für Angehörige unterschiedlicher Generationen in Migrantenfamilien hat?
- Wie ist der Gefahr der Festschreibung von MigrantInnen als „Andere“ der „eigenen“ Geschichts- und Erinnerungskultur zu begegnen?

Zwei Einführungsvorträge zum Thema „Erinnerung, Gedächtnis und Geschichten – Konzepte und methodische Implikationen“
Die Diskussion der Methoden soll an inhaltlichen Themenkomplexen ausgerichtet werden. Dies könnten die folgenden sein (Vorschläge für weitere thematische Sektionen sind willkommen):

Das Kolloquium soll ForscherInnen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen im Juni 2008 an der Universität Luxemburg zusammenführen. Die Konferenzsprachen werden Französisch, Deutsch und Englisch sein (mit Simultanübersetzung). Wir laden dazu ein, Vorschläge für Beiträge (Titel, Abstract von max. 500 Wörtern, Kurz-CV) an die Organisatoren Dr. Elisabeth Boesen und Fabienne Lentz zu senden. Deadline ist der 15.3.2008.

The nation, national historiography and national cultures of memory still represent important factors in generating narratives of the past. Of late, however, we also note the growing impact of supra-national historiography and universalistic historical interpretations. In the context of the European unification a search for “European traditions” and a common foundation of identity can be observed. In the realm of academia, post-colonial studies and world- or global-history approaches have helped to overcome eurocentric perspectives. Apparently, the “globalization of memory” is one of the cultural corollaries of economic globalization. In view of these developments, research on migration memories appears to be particularly important. The study of the emergence and maintenance of transnational (or translocal) memories implies the analyses of the specific modes in which migrants seek to anchor their feelings of belonging and their opportunities of participation in narratives, i.e. in constructions of the past. Methodological issues related to this field of research will be the subject of a workshop which will be held in June 2008 at the University of Luxembourg.
Within the framework of a multidisciplinary research project on “Collective experience, intergenerational memory and identity construction in Luxembourg” a group of researchers currently investigates four domains of memory that are considered essential for Luxembourg society. Apart from memories of war and occupation, the analyses of which is part of an international cooperative endeavour (see Centre for Interdisciplinary Memory Research, KWI Essen), the project concentrates on the memories of certain social groups which have hitherto been more or less neglected by (historical) research, namely peasants, steelworkers and immigrants. The subproject on migration (notably on Italian and Portuguese immigration) considers the forms of remembering the process of immigration to Luxembourg in immigrant families by members of different generations. An important aspect of this study consists in the analyses of different memory cultures (country of origin and receiving country) and their respective influence on ideas of belonging and social participation in migrant families.
As far as migration processes, different memory cultures and the impact of this multiplicity on memory processes in the family are concerned, memory research is in the beginning stages. The workshop will give the opportunity to discuss whether memory research in this domain is confronted with specific methodological problems. Amongst the questions to be considered during the workshop are the following:
- Which methods of data collection and analyses are suited to investigate the specific complexity of individual, familial and collective migration memories?
- How do we analyse the significance of the various national histories (country of origin, receiving country) at different stages of migration processes and with respect to members of different generations?
- How do we face the danger of turning migrants into “the other” of “our own” history and culture of memory?
Preliminary program:

The workshop intends to bring together scholars from different disciplines in June 2008 at the University of Luxembourg. La nation, l'historiographie nationale ainsi que les politiques de mémoire officielles constituent des facteurs importants dans le processus de formation de narrations et d'interprétations du passé. Depuis un certain temps cependant, l'historiographie supranationale et les interprétations historiques universalistes gagnent en importance. Ainsi, on peut observer, dans le contexte de l'intégration européenne, la recherche de traditions « européenes » et d’éléments identitaires communs. Sur un plan scientifique, les études postcoloniales et l'histoire globale contribuent à aller au-delà des perspectives eurocentriques. La globalisation de la mémoire tend à être présentée comme corollaire culturel de la mondialisation économique. Compte tenu de ces développements, la recherche sur la mémoire des migrations revêt une importance particulière. L'analyse de l’émergence et de la sauvegarde de ces mémoires transnationales soulève la question de la manière avec laquelle les migrants fondent leurs sentiments d’appartenance et leurs aspirations de participation sur des narrations, c’est-à-dire sur des interprétations du passé. Les problèmes méthodiques liés à cette thématique sont le sujet d'un colloque qui va se tenir en juin 2008 à l'Université du Luxembourg.
Outre les souvenirs relatifs à la guerre et à l'occupation, dont l'analyse fait partie d'un projet comparatif européen (voir Center for Interdisciplinary Memory Research, KWI Essen), l’étude porte sur les mémoires du monde paysan, des ouvriers industriels et des immigrants au Luxembourg. Le sous-projet cité en dernier lieu (traitant essentiellement des migrants italiens et portugais) analyse les rapports que les différentes générations de familles de migrants entretiennent avec le souvenir de la migration.
La recherche sur la mémoire n'en est qu'à ses débuts en ce qui concerne les différents processus migratoires, les cultures de la mémoire ainsi que les liens entre la mémoire collective et les souvenirs familiaux et individuels . Les problèmes méthodologiques que cette thématique peut engendrer seront au centre du colloque prévu, et s'articuleront autour de trois questions principales:
- Quelles méthodes de collecte et d'analyse de données sont susceptibles de saisir la complexité spécifique des souvenirs individuels, familiaux et publics suscitée par le processus migratoire?
- Comment analyser la signification de l'histoire du pays d'origine et du pays d'accueil dans les différentes phases du processus migratoire et pour les membres des différentes générations d'une famille?
- Comment faire face au risque de la catégorisation des migrants en tant qu'"étrangers" à la "propre" culture d'histoire et de mémoire.
Déroulement provisoire:
Deux exposés introductifs sur le sujet de "souvenir, mémoire et histoires - concepts et implications méthodologiques".
Les discussions se baseront sur différents complexes thématiques, dont par exemple les suivants (d'autres propositions sont les bienvenues):
1. Migration et variantes de la mémoire: genres, générations
2. Migration et mémoire nationale
3. Culture de la mémoire: médias et acteurs de la mémoire des migrations
Le colloque, qui aura lieu en juin 2008, entend réunir à l'Université du Luxembourg des chercheuses et chercheurs de différentes disciplines . Les langues de communication seront le français, l'allemand et l'anglais (une traduction simultanée lors du colloque est assurée).
